MediaCorp Channel 8 began programming on Nov 23, 1963 and apart from Mandarin shows, Tamil programmes were also telecast on the channel then.
Come Nov 23 this year, Channel 8 will celebrate its 45th anniversary with a spectacular and starry bang! Apart from special skits and performances, the men and women behind Channel 8’s drama, variety, news and current affairs over these long years will also be invited to the show.
Four awards - Most Classic Drama Character, Most Classic Variety Show Character, Most Memorable TV Host, and Most Memorable News Anchor will also be handed out that night; the judges will be the veteran reporters and TV crew of the media industry.
Aimed at uncovering your lost memories of the beloved shows that were a big part of your life from childhood, teenage years to adulthood, the gala event boasts the following segments:
Guo Liang, Kym Ng, Michelle Chong and Ben Yeo take on the task of impersonating their seniors, from programmes in the 60s and 70s like Sheng Bao Zhi Ye 声宝之夜 and Jin Ye Kan Wo 今夜看我 to those in the 90s like City Beat 城人杂志. But their mission doesn’t end here; the actual hosts will become interviewees, so through the conversation with the real hosts like Zhang Wei, Chen Mingli, Xu Shengnan and Chen Shucheng, the ‘fake’ hosts will take viewers on a journey from past variety programmes to the more current ones. Our then SBC Singers like Lin Anning, Bei Xingni, Anthony Png, Peter Chen, Ye Zhengwen, Guo Congyi will also grace the event and perform as a group from. Even past winners of Star Search will reunite on stage as a big family.
A comedy skit with a cast like Ah Shui and Ah Mei of The Awakening, Ah Gui from Samsui Women, Aiyoyo from Good Morning, Sir!, Xiao Fei Yu from The Flying Fish, Yan Fei from The Unbeatables, Bobo from Pretty Faces and Lobang King from Don’t Worry Be Happy, but acted by Mark Lee, Henry Thia, Dennis Chew, Patricia Mok, Michelle Tay, Zheng Geping, Chew Chor Meng, Cavin Soh, Vivian Lai and Quan Yifeng instead! Joining them is the cast from The Little Nyonya like Jeanette Aw, Joanne Peh, Qi Yuwu, Pierre Png and Yao Wenlong.
An integral part of the channel, the development of News & Current Affairs will be recounted by none other than the news presenters themselves. But to make the item more interesting, the three presenters are seated on rotating seats, which means they will be taking turns to read the news. However they have no idea when they will be ‘rotated’ off the presenter’s table and when they will be ‘rotated’ back to face the camera. But no matter when the rotation takes place, their responsibility is to make sure that there is a smooth transition between one presenter to the next.
The beginning of kid’s drama is much earlier than the current drama unit and nobody knows more than our veteran artistes who once acted as young parents to the kids. Veteran artistes like Li Yinzhu, Chen Shucheng, Wang Xiuyun, Yang Junhe and Zhou Quanxi will narrate the unforgettable kid’s drama they acted in, which includes Xiao DD, Jia Zai Toa Payoh 家在大芭窑, Lou Shang Lou Xia Yi Jia Qin 楼上楼下一家亲 and Pu Gong Ying 蒲公英. Artistes who were once child actors and actresses like Fann Wong, Michelle Chia, Yang Junwei and Huang Shuangxi will get to meet their playmates in those kid’s drama days. Which child actor will turn up? Will they be recognizable?
Young artistes like Nat Ho, Zzen, Andie Chen, Dai Yangtian, Belinda Lee, Dawn Yeoh, Paige Chua and Koh Yah Hwee will put up an energetic Lindy Hop number. The more adventurous couples will try the challenging moves like flipping and tossing.
Zoe Tay, Yvonne Lim, Chen Hanwei and Tay Ping Hui will each represent Wind, Fire, Thunder and Rain, and these elements will be re-created on stage through dance, music and effects.
In the midst of the celebration, Channel 8 shows respect to the pioneers and well-acclaimed actors of comedy skit: Wang Sha, Ye Feng, Hua Liang and MC King.
Remember the days when our parents and grandparents watched Hong Kong and Taiwan serials like Tian Can Bian 天蚕变, Da Nei Qun Ying大内群英 and Justice Bao 包青天? You will get to re-live these moments and catch snippets of those dramas. Congratulatory messages from foreign artistes will also be shown.

当晚也将颁发四大“媒体推荐奖”。本地平面与电视资深工作者，将选出45年来最经典的戏剧人物、最经典的综艺人物、最有印象的主持人、以及最有印象的8频道新闻主播，给予他们最高的肯定。 节目方面，除了让观众惊喜连连，也绝对会勾起大家不少回忆。内容就包括：
经典戏剧人物如【雾锁南洋】的阿水和阿梅、【和平的代价】的龅牙嫂、【三面夏娃】的Bobo、【早安老师】的哎哟哟老师和【双天至尊】的言飞，将重现在你眼前。这次，赋予他们新生命的将会是李国煌、辉哥、周崇庆、莫小玲、郑荔芬、郑各评、周初明、苏智诚、赖怡伶和权怡凤。在这段节目中，观众们一定要睁大眼睛，因为正版演员随时可能会出现！
郭亮、鐘琴、庄米雪、杨志龙将模仿多位大家耳熟能详的主持界前辈，从最早期的【声宝之夜】到90年代的【城人杂志】，还会‘拷问’原版的节目主持人如张为、朱永钦、陈澍城、周黛兰、张永权、陈明俐和李冰等。
新闻与时事主播们将接受挑战，摆脱平日严肃形象，以综艺的方式报道新闻，必定让观众耳目一新。
新传媒年轻艺人鹤天赐、姚懿珊、蔡琦慧、章缜翔、李心钰、陈邦鋆、戴阳天和许雅慧，将带来一段朝气十足，充满青春活力的Lindy Hop （林蒂跳步）舞蹈。有些甚至会挑战翻抛等比较高难度的动作。
好奇当年参与【小DD】、【家在大巴窑】、【蒲公英】等儿童剧的小演员们现在的模样？当时参演这几部剧集的资深演员李茵珠、王秀云、杨俊贺和周全喜，将带着一班已经长大的儿童演员们，一起在台上和大家见面。
历届【斗歌竞艺】冠军如张金泉、叶佩芬、张汉林、李伟菘和杨全莲，将为大家献唱多首经典戏剧主题曲。
8频道台庆剧【小娘惹】剧情横跨70年，赴怡保、槟城和马六甲拍摄。在台庆当晚，观众将能先睹为快，欣赏由主要演员所带来的精彩片段。
